What’s New Wednesday, March 29, 2017

I’m trying something new this week. It’s called What’s New Wednesday. This will be a shorter post about what’s been going on in the past week. It’s been an exciting few days in our household. We have a new family member. Three of us are getting ready for two different trips. And Spring is finally and fully here.

A New Family Member

Over the weekend, we adopted a new puppy. She’s actually full-grown, but tiny enough that everyone assumes she’s a puppy. Her name is Penny, and she’s super sweet. She’s a mutt. The best kind of dog, in my opinion. We’re working on a potty routine. She’s pretty good about it, only a couple of accidents. After loosing our dog a month ago, it’s wonderful to have a furry family member again.

We are still in the getting-to-know-each-other phase. What I know so far: Penny likes to go for walks, but is scared of cars rides. She has thing for feet (my daughter calls her a little weirdo). Her ears remind us of Gizmo. She loves everyone she meets. All she wants is to be next to one of her people. We love her so much already! I’m sure you see more photos of her here in the future and on my Instagram.

If you are considering a new family member of the four-legged variety, please consider a rescue animal. We found Penny on Petfinder.com. That’s where we found Lily too (our last dog). We also stopped by our local shelter and met some cats, kittens, and bunnies. So if you’re not a dog person, no worries. You can adopt all sorts of animals in need of a good home. Some rescues even have horses and reptiles.

Packing Our Bags

Later this week, I will be traveling with my middle child to Bellingham, Washington. She’s been accepted to Western Washington University, and we’re heading up to check everything out. Our flight lands at SEA-TAC Friday morning. The last time she was in Seattle, she was a flower girl at my best friend’s wedding. She was three and, halfway down the aisle, she bolted. Now she’s 17, graduating from high school, and heading off to college. We’ll be taking another trip later in April to Salem, Oregon. She’s considering Willamette University too. Decisions, decisions. Part of me hopes she’ll stay in California, closer to us (UCSC and UCSB are some possibilities). But the Pacific Northwest is beautiful and fun. If that’s where she ends up, I’ll get to visit. Just keep looking on the bright side!

My son is also packing for a trip. The lucky 6th grader is headed to Yosemite National Park next week for science camp. So before I leave for Washington, I need to make sure all his supplies are in order. Spring may have sprung in our part of California, but Yosemite Valley is still experiencing some cold weather. It’s always hard to send a kid off to camp, but I’m excited for him too. Yosemite is an amazing place and the activities on their schedule sound fantastic. Stay posted for updates on these trips in the upcoming weeks.

Spring Is Here

I took a walk yesterday with my neighbor and the wildflowers are amazing! If you’ve been reading my posts, you’ll know I live a few doors down from a nature trail. I am so lucky to live near so much beauty. Yesterday, we saw California poppies, lupine, mustard flowers, clover, milkmaids, thistle, buttercup, Indian Warrior, blue-eyed grass flowers, and vetch. It was an amazing variety of flowers and we haven’t even reached peak bloom yet! They are so beautiful! Sure, they bring seasonal allergies with them, but I love it all the same.

Book of the Week

Thought I’d update you on what I’ve been reading. I picked up a copy of  Jenny Lawson’s Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things at my local bookstore. If four-letter words and very blunt talk really bother you, then this is not the book for you. I’m not a fan of vulgar language(she uses it a lot), but I have laughed out loud more times reading this than almost any other book I’ve read. Just be aware that Lawson deals with some very heavy topics and her language is more colorful than many sailors’. I haven’t finished it yet. Only about 30 pages to go. This was a #1 New York Times bestseller. The author started as a blogger, has more diagnosed mental illnesses than she had cats (and she has a lot of cats), a thing for bad taxidermy (reading about Rory the Raccoon and the cats almost had me peeing my pants), and a long-suffering husband. I found it rude and crass, but also inspiring and hilarious.

There’s my what’s new this week. Next week, I’ll have some thoughts on our trip to Bellingham and on how much you can miss an 11-year-old boy who goes off to camp. Who knows what else will come my way, but I’m looking forward to finding out.
