12 Reasons Fall is Better Than Summer

In my last post, I wrote about how excited I am for fall to return. Here is my list of why autumn has summer beat hands down:

  1. Cooler weather. No more sweating just because I walked outside. No more back-of-the-leg burns from getting into my unbearably hot car. Did I mention lower bills because you can turn off the air-conditioning? And you no longer feel guilty for hiding inside. Curl up with a good book and read or enjoy the cooler weather outdoors on a brisk walk.
  2. Cooler weather means being able to wear more clothes. Kiss those less-than-flattering swim suits goodbye! I won’t have to worry about them for a while. No more shorts that show the jiggle. You can always add more layers to get warm, but you can only take so many off to stay cool (unless you want to get arrested). Hello to cozy sweaters and cute jackets.  Greetings new pair of boots. I may need to buy a few new things, which takes us to number 3…
  3. Back-to-School shopping, sales, and fun. I love the new outfits, new backpacks, and especially all the fun school supplies. Have I told you how much I love planners and pens yet? And the best part is you can find it all on sale! Who doesn’t love a good deal? I mean, seriously. Now that summer is over, you get to meet new teachers and reconnect with school friends.Back-to-school barbecue, here we come!
  4. Apples. Not the “I’ve been sitting in cold storage for the past 11 months” kind of apples. No, I’m talking about fresh, crunchy, sweet and delicious harvest time apples. We have a farmer’s market in my hometown and the apple guy is my new best friend. Eat them as they are (crispy and juicy) or make a pie, muffins, pancakes, candied apples…because soon enough we’ll be back to those mealy ones from cold storage.
  5. Football season begins. I have to throw this one in here for my husband. Not that I mind watching a game or two. It’s definitely more fun to watching than summertime baseball. Sorry. I know baseball is America’s pastime, but the games go on and on and on.
  6. Fall Décor. Having a pretty autumn wreath on the door and pumpkins on the doorstep is so inviting. I love the colors that feel so festive and comforting.  I’m not usually a huge fan of orange, but it just feels right this time of year.
  7. Pumpkin spiced everything and anything! Okay, maybe not anything, but there are so many fantastic recipes out there and your house smells so great when you make them. I even have a room spray that fakes it when I don’t have time to bake.
  8. Chili, cornbread, soups, stews….Ah yes, autumn means comfort food. It’s time to break out my slow cooker.
  9. No more seasonal allergies! For some reason, spring and summer are the worst for sneezes and sinus headaches in our house. When the weather cools off, the hay fever goes away.
  10. Goodbye mosquitoes and all your nasty little friends. See you next spring.
  11. Autumn holidays. My husband and kids love Halloween. They love the creepy decorations and trick-or-treat candy. My older kids love to hand out candy. I’m more of a Thanksgiving fan. Gravy, yes , gravy is my favorite Thanksgiving food. Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, green beans, and rolls are great, but they’re mainly a method for eating more gravy. And don’t forget the pies!
  12. The smells and sounds of autumn: Fresh cut hay, wood smoke, and the crunch of autumn leaves beneath my feet. And what about drinking some warm and chocolaty? Does anything make you happier than the perfect cup of cocoa?
